Web Design

Web design is a field that encompasses a variety of skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of websites. It is focused on designing and building the visual aesthetics and usability of a website and involves elements such as:

  1. Layout: This is the way the graphics, ads, and text are arranged. A good web design should strive to maintain a balance, consistent layout throughout the website. The aim is to guide the viewer’s eye around the screen and present information in a clear, coherent manner.
  2. Color: The choice of colors depends on the purpose of the site and its clients. It could range from simple black-and-white to a multi-colored design, conveying the personality of a person or the brand of an organization.
  3. Graphics: These can include logos, photos, clipart, or icons, all of which enhance the web design. For user friendliness, these need to be placed appropriately and should work with the color and content of the web page, without making it too congested or slow to load.
  4. Fonts: The use of various fonts can enhance a website’s design. However, most web browsers can only read a select number of fonts, known as “web-safe fonts”, so your design choices are somewhat limited.
  5. Content: Content and design can work together to enhance the message of the site through visuals and text. Text should always be relevant and useful, so as not to confuse the reader and to give them what they want so they will stay on the site. Content should be optimized for search engines and should be of a suitable length, incorporating relevant keywords.
  6. Navigation: This involves the ease with which users can take action or move around a website. Navigation includes a well-structured, logical page hierarchy with clickable buttons and links, and techniques like the “three-click rule” which aims to allow the user to find any information they need within three clicks.
  7. Accessibility and Compatibility: Websites should be designed to be accessible to all users, including those with disabilities, using technologies like WAI-ARIA. Websites also need to be compatible with a range of browsers, devices, and operating systems.
  8. Interactive: Increasing engagement and active user participation can be achieved by adding interactive elements, like comment sections or opinion polls in the design.

To do all of this effectively, web designers typically have knowledge of graphic design, and user experience (UX) principles, and often have proficiency in multiple coding languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and others.

However, in the modern web development process, the role of web design is often split into two categories: web designers who primarily focus on the visual, layout, and aesthetic elements, and front-end developers who focus on implementing these designs into a functional, interactive website.

Website Architecture

Website architecture is the hierarchical structure of your website pages. This structure is reflected through internal linking. Your website’s structure should help users easily find information and help search engine crawlers understand the relationship between different pages.
